VIA Rail Canada logoMONTREAL — An artificial intelligence pilot project aimed at reducing fuel consumption and support of more than 450 nonprofit organizations and charities are among actions VIA Rail Canada highlights in a yearly progress report on its 2021-25 sustainability plan.

The update released Wednesday on the passenger operator’s environmental, social, and governance plan is available here, while the full five-year plan is available here.

“Sustainability is a cornerstone of our mandate, values, and commitment to deliver a more modern and responsible transportation network”, Brigitte Dagnault, chief communications and marketing officer, said in a press release. “Our plan reinforces the key role sustainability plays in our decision-making process, leading us to make meaningful changes across the organization. We are on our way to meeting our 2025 sustainability objectives.

Other moves highlighted in the progress report include changes in packaging and products to address an objective to create a zero-waste experience on the new Quebec City-Windsor corridor fleet, and development of a decarbonization plan.
