CONTAGEM, Brazil — Wabtec is introducing a new heavy-haul locomotive in Brazil designed to address decarbonization concerns while providing similar performance.
The ES44ACi features a 12-cylinder Evolution Series diesel engine, producing the same 4,500 horsepower as the 16-cylinder FDL engine in its predecessor. “This represents greater energy efficiency and lower emissions,” Daniela Ornelas, Wabtec vice president of products, said in a press release, “thanks to a project aimed at the thermal efficiency of combustion combined with a dual-intake air cooling system adopted in these four-stroke turbocharged engines equipped with electronic fuel injection.”
The locomotives will reduce fuel consumption and emissions by more than 5%, while the new engines will increase reliability and increase maintenance intervals by approximately 28%, the company says. Rail operators Suzano, MRS, and Rumo have ordered 25 of the locomotives to date, with the first deliveries set for late March and early April.
