Canadian National logoNAISCOOT, Ontario — Two crew members were reported to have suffered minor injuries when a Canadian National train derailed late Saturday, reportedly after hitting a washout.

CBC News reports a CN spokesman said a locomotive and 24 empty intermodal cars derailed on Canadian Pacific’s Parry Sound Subdivision; a Transportation Safety Board of Canada representative told the CBC the train involved had 99 cars — 57 loads and 42 empties — and derailed about 10:42 p.m. An adjacent highway remained closed as of Sunday night as cleanup continues.

The CN train, en route from Montreal to Prince Rupert, B.C., was operating on CP in an area where the two railroads have a directional running agreement. Both railroads reportedly suffered washouts in the area but CN’s line has been returned to service.

The washouts led to an extended delay for VIA Rail Canada’s Canadian near Parry Sound, Ont., on its trip from Toronto to Vancouver. As of Sunday evening, the train was operating about 5½ hours behind schedule.
