WASHINGTON — U.S. carload traffic moved back above 2021 levels for the week ending July 23, while overall traffic was down by a small margin, according to the latest statistics from the Association of American Railroads.
Total volume was 498,901 carloads and intermodal units, a decrease of 0.8% compared to the corresponding week a year ago. That included 232,565 carloads, up 1.1%, and 266,336 containers and trailers, down 2.5%.
Motor vehicles and parts, up 16.6%, and food and farm products excluding train, up 6.5%, showed the strongest increases among the 10 commodity categories making up the carload figures.
Overall figures, through 29 weeks of 2022, have overall traffic down 3.3%, carloads down 0.2%,and intermodal units down 3.3%.
North American figures for the week, from 12 reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, include totals of 328,063 carloads, down 0.4%; 352,928 intermodal units, a decline of 2.4%, and total traffic of 680,991 carloads and intermodal units, a 1.4% drop. Total North American traffic through 29 weeks is down 3.3%.
