WASHINGTON — Weekly U.S. rail traffic for the week ending Feb. 24 was again up compared to 2023, according to statistics from the Association of American Railroads.
Overall traffic was 483,656 carloads and intermodal units, up 7.7% from the same week a year ago. It was the fifth straight week volume has bettered figures from 2023. The latest figures included 224,251 carloads, up 2.6%, and 259,405 containers and trailers, up 12.6%
Through eight weeks of 2024, carload traffic is down 4.6% compared to the same period a year ago, while intermodal traffic is up 7.4%. Overall traffic shows a 1.5% increase.
North American statistics, from 12 reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, include 336,833 carloads, a 3.5% increase over the corresponding week a year ago, and 341,906 intermodal units, an increase of 10.8%. The combined total of 678,739 carloads and intermodal units represents a 7.1% increase.
Year-to-date figures for North America show a 0.7% increase from the first eight weeks of 2023.
