WASHINGTON — Weekly U.S. rail traffic remained up compared to 2023 according to the latest statistics from the Association of American Railroads, with intermodal traffic continuing to account for the overall growth.
For the week ending June 22, total traffic was 485,557 carloads and intermodal units, an increase of 3.6% compared to the corresponding week a year ago. That includes 220,096 carloads, down 0.8%, and 265,461 containers and trailers, up 7.5%.
Through 25 weeks of 2024, carload traffic is down 4.7% while intermodal volume is up 8.8% for an overall increase of 2.2%.
North American volume for the week, from 10 reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, includes 323,953 carloads, down 1.6% from the same week in 2023, and 347,092 intermodal units, up 5.4%. The overall volume of 671,045 carloads and intermodal units represents a 1.9% increase. Year-to-date North American volume, through 25 weeks this year, is up 2% compared to 2023. Cumulative volume in Canada is up 0.8%, while year-to-date volume in Mexico is up 6.9%.
