WASHINGTON — U.S. carload and intermodal rail traffic were both up in figures for the week ending Oct. 26, 2024, according to statistics from the Association of American Railroads.
U.S. railroads handled 228,829 carloads, up 0.9% from the same week in 2023, while intermodal volume was 290,586 containers and trailers, an increase of 6.9%.
Through 43 weeks of 2024, carload traffic is down 3.2% while intermodal volume is up 8.9% for a total gain of 3.1% compared to the same period a year agod.
North American totals for the week, from nine reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, include 340,775 carloads, up 0.2%, and 376,589 intermodal units, up 6%. The total volume of 717,364 carloads and intermodal units equals a 3.1% increase.
For the year to date, North American volume is up 2.3% compared to the first 43 weeks of 2023. That includes flat volume in Canada and a 2.6% increase in Mexico.
