Welcome aboard the Trains–Special Interest Tours 2024 Alaska by Rail adventure. Please join us as we travel on the Alaska Railroad for 9 days from Sept. 8 to 17, heading south from Fairbanks to Anchorage, Alaska.

There was a beautiful sunrise in southern Alaska this morning — and we got to see it! Yes, after days of cloudy skies and rain, the sun shone through. Our adventures today would take us to Seward on Resurrection Bay and the Gulf of Alaska. The train that would get us there was the Coastal Classic, the only summer-schedule train we had yet to ride. Boarding a Girdwood, we traveled almost 3 hours to Seward. In this sea port town we added water transportation to our list of modes used here in Alaska. A 4-hour boat cruise took us around the Seward area in search of glaciers and wildlife.

Sunrise — Just east of Girdwood the Coastal Classic paralleled the Seward Highway. Beyond the highway is the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet. And beyond that, the sunrise breaks through the clouds.

As we detrained in Seward today another example came forward. Virtually every Alaska Railroad station is equipped with a lift and crews will roll it out for those who have difficulties with the steps. Alaska is accessible in so many ways.

Glacier Express We add another mode of transportation to the adventure with the Glacier Express. This 180-passenger excursion boat would convey us into Resurrection Bay and the Gulf of Alaska from Seward. We were seeking glaciers and wildlife.

Sunset — While the sun set, we were back aboard the Coastal Classic. The colors of the sunset afforded the group a perfect opportunity to reflect on a full, rich day in Alaska.

Day 9 — One final day in Alaska. Our agenda includes a visit to the Alaska Railroad shops and the Anchorage Museum.
