Diesel-powered trains operate on a bucolic railroad line completed in 1903. Now owned by Clark County and operated by volunteers, the 8-mile route features breathtaking scenery, a high trestle over the Lewis River, and a 330-foot tunnel hand carved from solid rock.
Choices
Passengers may choose to ride in either a caboose, open-air car, or heavyweight coach during the excursion on the railroad. All trains are currently powered by a vintage Alco diesel locomotive from the 1940s.
When to go
Excursions typically operate on select weekends between May and December. Many of the excursions are themed events, such as train robberies and wine tastings, as well as Halloween and Christmas runs. Check the railroad’s website for the most updated schedule of events and excursions.
Good to know
While current excursions are diesel-powered, the railroad is working to return 1929 Alco steam locomotive No. 10 to active service, a 2-8-2T tank engine.
Worth doing
The railroad operates a unique Christmas Train and Tree experience in November and December. Once the train arrives at Moulton, families may visit with Santa and select a locally grown Christmas tree, which will then be carried on the same train back to the station at Yacolt.
Don’t miss
Passengers may want to visit Moulton Falls Park on their own and spend more time than the 30-minute layover allows. The park features a hiking trail and connects to the nearby Lucia Falls Park and the Bells Mountain Trail.
Getting there
The railroad is located an hour’s drive from Vancouver, Wash., or Portland, Ore. From Interstate 5, take Exit 11 to SR 502, travel to SR 503, and turn right on Rock Creek Road for 11 miles to Yacolt. The station is on Railroad Avenue at Yacolt Road.
