Special Interest Tours

Special Interest Tours and Trains Magazine bring you a rail excursion tour with outstanding views of the west. Get ready to enjoy exploring the best of Colorado’s railroads from June 3-9 with Trains Editor Carl Swanson on this 7-days/6-nights adventure. This all-inclusive tour will traverse the mountains on the Cumbres-Toltec line, ride the famed Georgetown Loop, enjoy the open-air seating on the Durango-Silverton route, and much more!

Time to tour

Day 1 (June 3): Welcome to Colorado
Guests will fly into the Denver airport and use the rail line from the airport to downtown, or train into Denver Union Station and meet at our hotel in downtown Denver. This first evening you will meet your fellow guests, tour guides and Trains Magazine special guest, Carl Swanson, at our welcome dinner.

Day 2 (June 4): Golden Railroad Museum and Georgetown Loop Railway
Start the day with a short drive to the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden to get an overview about the state’s railroad history. Then, get ready to hop to Georgetown where you’ll have free time to explore and grab lunch before going on the private car on the Georgetown Loop Railroad.

Day 3 (June 5): Leadville Southern Railroad & Pike’s Peak
Off to Leadville, the 2-mile high city, to board our privately chartered train on the Leadville Railroad. Next, we’ll head down into the valley to board the infamous Pike’s Peak Cog Railway, where the group will board a private car for the journey to the top of this famous mountain.

Day 4 (June 6): Royal Gorge Train & Bridge
On today’s Royal Gorge Route, we’ll first chase the Arkansas River from our Vista Dome Car — or guests can venture out to the open air car for some great photo opportunities! Upon our return to the depot, you’ll head to the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park for a chance to photograph the next train as it passes under the bridge.

Day 5 (June 7): Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad
A morning drive brings us to Antonito for our all-day narrow-gauge excursion from Antonito to Chama at the Cumbres & Toltec RR. We break for lunch at the Osier Station. Our private bus will then take us to Durango — our final destination for the day. Once in Durango, you’ll settle into the historic and classically elegant Strater Hotel right in the heart of the town. In the evening, we’ll walk a block to the Durango & Silverton for a private roundhouse tour.

Day 6 (June 8): Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
We start early for a one-way journey from Durango to Silverton. On arrival, guests will have free time to explore, grab lunch, and photograph the trains in the yard if they wish. Upon departing Silverton, we’ll head to Grand Junction to spend the night. Dinner will be at Two Rivers Winery.

Day 7 (June 9): Departure
Guests can either head to the Grand Junction Airport or Amtrak for departures home.
