PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation logoHoused in the historic Elmira Station, the Elmira Railway Museum offers a look at railroading on the Prince Edward Island in the early 1900s.

Choices

The museum features a re-created station master’s office and waiting room inside the station as well as displays and artifacts. A miniature train operates around the museum, and interactive experiences are provided for visitors to ride on a speeder, a trolley, or a new handcar. Various special events take place on the outdoor stage, which was built from the base of a flatcar.

When to go

Between June and August, the museum is open every day from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., while being open on weekdays only in September. Check their website for the full schedule in addition to special events and tour groups taking place.

Good to know

The Elmira Station once served as a terminal point for the Prince Edward Island’s railway for many years.

Worth doing

Once an abandoned rail line, the nearby Confederation Trail provides scenic highlights through woodlots and farmland for hiking and biking.

Don’t miss

The Elmira Railway Museum is part of the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation which operates six other museums and historical sites throughout Prince Edward Island. This includes the Acadian Museum, the Beaconsfield Historic House, the Eptek Art & Culture Centre, the Green Park Shipbuilding Museum and Yeo House, the Basin Head Fisheries Museum, the Orwell Corner Historic Village, and former Canadian National MLW RS18u diesel locomotive 1762 No. 1762 on display in Kensington
