Exporail logoThe largest collection of railway equipment in the country is well worth a stop for anyone interested in Canadian railways and rail transit. Locomotives, rolling stock, and streetcars from many parts of the country tell of the evolution of both industries.

Choices

The museum’s collection boasts more than 160 rail vehicles. Special events and exhibits are scheduled during the year geared toward modelers and transit enthusiasts. Between May and October, you can take a short ride on the museum’s passenger train on most Saturdays, Sundays, and Canadian Holidays. On select dates in November and December, you can ride the Christmas Train. The main building contains only a portion of the rolling stock collection. You can explore more of it throughout the site between May and October.

When to go

The museum is open daily between mid-May and early September. During September and October, it is open Wednesday through Sunday. The remainder of the year, the museum opens on weekends, for spring break, and around Christmas.

Good to know

Stop, Look, Listen: Incoming Train? is a permanent exhibition on railway safety that provides an interactive, educational, fun, and preventative railway safety experience for young visitors and their parents.

Worth doing

There is much to see and do in Montreal. You can discover centuries of history in Old Montreal, explore Olympic Park and Mount Royal, or take in one of its many festivals and international events.

Don’t miss

Rocky Mountain Express, an IMAX movie on the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway featuring scenes of Hudson No. 2816, is shown for an additional fee in a small theater in the Angus Pavilion at announced times daily.

Getting there

The museum is located 12 miles from downtown Montreal. Amtrak’s Adirondack connects the city with the rest of its network in Albany, N.Y. EXO provides bus and commuter rail service to the vicinity of the museum. On Saint-Pierre Street, a locomotive marks the entrance to Exporail’s parking lot.
