Newfoundland tourist railroads you must visit include a restored station to a railroad museum with a preserved collection of narrow-gauge equipment on display and everything in between. Here’s our list of must-see tourist railroads, museums, and displays — for almost every region in Newfoundland.
Railway Coastal Museum
The Railway Coastal Museum tells the stories of the Newfoundland Railway and Coastal Boat services which helped connect the province with the outside world. The museum is housed in the restored 1903 Riverhead station, which was built out of granite from a Newfoundland quarry. It occupies the entire ground floor and passenger platform at the end of the building, containing a large collection of items relating to both the rail and coastal boat services. You can walk along the platform where passengers boarded the Newfie Bullet express train, and examine the preserved rolling stock displayed in the train park. The Railway Coastal Museum is open year-round, daily during summer. Special events are also offered throughout the year. Visit the website for more information and to see the full schedule.

Several significant pieces are displayed for the public, including the Newfie Bullet, once Newfoundland’s fastest passenger train. Steam locomotive No. 593 is also a showpiece of the museum with a representative selection of rolling stock. A snowplow is also featured, along with various other types of railcars visitors can walk through and explore. The Railway Society of Newfoundland Museum is open daily during the summer with special events offered year-round. Visit their Facebook page for more information.
