Experience the Pacific Ocean on a 10-mile, 90-minute excursion along the shores of Tillamook Bay. The train is pulled by a 1910 Heisler or a 1925 Baldwin 2-6-2 steam locomotive and runs between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach.
Choices
On your trip along the coast, you can ride in a flatcar, in the restored Southern Pacific 1924 Wilson River coach, or for an extra fee, in the steam locomotive’s cab. Wherever you sit, find a seat on the left side of the train. It’s on the ocean side, and the views are spectacular. A special fireworks train runs in July, the Candy Cane Express runs in December, and other specials also operate, some departing from Wheeler.
When to go
Excursions operate daily from May through September. Weekend service is available from October through mid-November.
Good to know
Dinner trains operate throughout the year and offer two seating options. Pulled by a diesel locomotive, these trains travel from Garibaldi to Wheeler and back along the coast.
Worth doing
Oregon’s dairy industry is based in Tillamook, and it produces some of the best cheese and ice cream in North America. Be sure to stop at the Tillamook Cheese factory in nearby Tillamook. In addition, the area features an aviation museum housed in a World War II airship hanger. You can also view numerous lighthouses along the Pacific shore.
Don’t miss
There is a layover between each run that provides the opportunity to explore Garibaldi or Rockaway Beach, get a bite to eat, or just enjoy the oceanside.
Getting there
Garibaldi is located 10 miles north of Tillamook, just off Highway 101. At Tillamook, take Highway 101 north to Garibaldi. In Garibaldi, turn left on Third Street to Lumberman’s Park, where the train boards.
