Texas State Railroad logoThe Texas State Railroad offers a relaxing ride through the piney woods region of east Texas between the towns of Rusk and Palestine. A variety of steam and diesel locomotives pull trains at a leisurely pace, giving riders a glimpse into the railroad’s long history of hauling agricultural and timber products in the early 20th century.

Choices

Trains operate on a varied year-round schedule. The single 4-hour round trip departs late morning and returns mid-afternoon with a one-hour lunch layover at the end of the line. Passengers can choose from several ticket levels. While meals are not provided on board, snack service is available during the ride. For groups of up to eight a caboose can be reserved in advance for an additional cost.

When to go

Texas summers are hot, so book early for air-conditioned seating. Spring and fall are mild, making the open-air class enjoyable. Bring a jacket, however, as East Texas weather can change rapidly.

Good to know

Check the website to see what locomotive is assigned each day. Discounts for groups are available. Of the two towns, Palestine is the largest and offers more variety in accommodations. Rusk is the headquarters for the railroad and offers several hotels and bed and breakfasts. Additional lodging is located in Jacksonville.

Worth doing

The railroad hosts a variety of special holiday trips and seasonal excursions, like the Polar Express and photographers’ specials. Steam locomotive cab rides are available for an additional fare.

Don’t miss

Each station has historical exhibits with pictures and displays including a section highlighting the role the railroad has played in numerous movie, TV, and commercial productions. Shop for gifts and souvenirs in both depots.

Getting there

Although many miles away from major metropolises, major airlines to Dallas and Houston provide the closest air transportation. From there, a leisurely 3-hour drive is required to reach the two east Texas towns. Directions from these cities to both towns’ depots are available on the website.
