The Three Rivers Rambler operates special event trains while departing from its depot in downtown Knoxville and heading into the Tennessee countryside. Its destination is the confluence of the Holston and French Broad Rivers, which combine to form the Tennessee River. Those three waterways lead to the Three Rivers Rambler moniker.
Choices
On the 90-minute round trip, you’ll ride in a coach or an open-air car. Either steam locomotives or various diesels are provided for the motive power. The premier locomotive is No. 154, a 1890 2-8-0 for the former Southern Railway that was on display in the city for years, but has since been restored to operation.
When to go
The Three Rivers Rambler operates on select days, primarily during the Christmas Season on the weekends in November and December. The latest schedule updates are posted on the railroad’s website.
Good to know
The Rambler is operated by Gulf & Ohio Railways, which operates freight trains over the same tracks as the excursion.
Worth doing
The departure point is near the University of Tennessee in an area with several good restaurants within walking distance. Sports fans could try and catch a Volunteers football or basketball game, or visit the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
Don’t miss
Along the way, feel free to ask the conductor or volunteer staff questions about the train or local history.
