SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad has received approval for a rezoning request allowing it to build a new freight terminal near New Carlisle, Ind., the South Bend Tribune reports.
At a meeting last week, the St. Joseph County Council voted 9-0 to rezone four parcels of land from agricultural to industrial use, and voted 9-0 to permit a special use allowing the establishment of a rail yard. The 120-acre site is near a Cleveland-Cliffs cold-rolled steel plant, and adjacent to both the South Shore tracks and U.S. Route 20. It is next to and wraps around a plant for Alkegen Corp, which produces high-temperature insulation products for industrial use.
The Tribune reports a representative of the railroad said it has not yet secured customers for the facility.
The site is about 12 miles west of South Bend.
