The activity level of this track belies its once important status as part of D&RGW’s Tennessee Pass.

Q In December 2010, I noticed a little-used rail line running through Eagle, Colo. What can you tell me about it? The mainline rail dated from the 1950s.
— Michael Humphreys, Berryville, Va.

A The tracks you saw were part of the Denver & Rio Grande Western’s Tennessee Pass route, and as such is now owned by Union Pacific. Except for a ballast train in 2007, UP hasn’t run trains along the route since 1997. And, although UP asked the Surface Transportation Board for permission to abandon the line, the railroad quickly changed its mind and now has no apparent plans to reopen or abandon the route.
