Herzog freight cars are often seen in track maintenance and repair projects, such as this ballast train.
Mike Yuhas
Q I have seen private freight cars on the major railroads carrying the logo and letters for “HERZOG.” Who owns them and what do they carry? – L. Frank Herman, Springfield, Ill.

A You likely saw a ballast hopper or a flatcar owned by one of three Herzog companies: Herzog Transit Services, Irving, Texas; Herzog Railroad Services, or Herzog Contracting Corp., both of St. Joseph, Mo. Herzog is well-known in the rail industry. Those companies’ equipment is often seen in ballast projects, new track construction, and diamond-crossing repair. Other services include contract light-rail operations and equipment maintenance, freight car leasing, signal construction and maintenance, and more. – Steve Sweeney
