Trains LIVE — Trains milestone — 12-27-2023 — For the 1,000th time the presses have rolled to produce another issue of Trains Magazine. As Carl Swanson, current Trains editor, noted: It is rare for a publication to reach the milestone of 1,000 issues. Trains is the second magazine in the Kalmbach family to do so (Model Railroader reached 1,000 issues in April 2017).

Trains Magazine 1,000 issue cover. On this episode of Trains LIVE we chat with now-retired Trains editor Kevin Keefe. In our discussion, Keefe reflects on the significance of the accomplishment and what it took to publish 1,000 issues. He also talks about his time as editor, the Union Pacific “Super Railroad” issue of November 1995, and how Jim Wrinn was brought on staff as editor.

We also take a moment to recognize that 1,000 issues would not have been possible without the loyalty and support of Train readers. Since the first issue in November 1940, rail enthusiasts and industry professionals have looked to Trains for a picture of the industry from multiple perspectives. Trains has been able to provide information in an entertaining and accurate manner, fulfilling the readers’ quest for railroad knowledge, and have now done so for 1,000 issues.
