Trains LIVE — The Center for Railroad Photography & Art — 3-1-2023 — If the old saying — a picture is worth a thousand words — holds true, then how many words can be said about thousands of pictures. For this episode of Trains LIVE we are in Madison, Wis., visiting the archive facility of the Center for Railroad Photography & Art. The Center is not a museum, although they do have traveling exhibits available. What the Center does have is over 500,000 photographs and paintings that help tell the story of railroading around the globe.
Our conversation today is with Scott Lothes, executive director, Adrienne Evans, director of archives and collections, and Hailey Paige, exhibitions and events manager. Each discusses the Center from their perspective and provides us with a behind-the-scenes look at this impressive collection.
The Center was founded in 1997. The idea for building its collection, representing a broad view of railroading, is credited to John Gruber (1936-2018). Gruber’s extensive collection of railroad images are now part of the Center’s holdings.
Come along for Trains LIVE — The Center for Railroad Photography & Art.
