The Rapido Trains HO scale GP9RM, based on prototypes rebuilt by Canadian National in the 1980s, recently arrived at our offices. Join Senior Editor Cody Grivno as he shares a brief history of CN No. 4000; highlights the many separate, factory-applied parts on the model; and demonstrates the sound and lighting effects (and a few “Easter egg” sounds, including the theme from a popular Canadian television program!) Then see the four-axle road switcher in action on our Wisconsin & Southern staff layout.

Single GP9RM locomotives are decorated in CN’s stripes (eight road numbers) and large noodle (four numbers) paint schemes. In addition, Rapido offers GP9RM/slug sets in early and late versions (three numbers each).

Features on the GP9RM include a heavy, die-cast metal frame with piping and traction cables; Blomberg trucks (with and without outside brake shoes); multiple battery box styles; open exhaust stacks or spark arrestors as appropriate; and detailed walkway tread. The powered GP9RM slug is fitted with Blomberg or Flexicoil trucks as appropriate and has metal side handrails with plastic stanchions, footboard pilots or curved plate pilots as appropriate, and working headlights. The motor on the slug is tucked into the frame and body.

The Rapido Trains HO scale GP9RM is priced at $239.95 (direct current, no sound) and $349.95 (with dual-mode ESU LokSound decoder). GP9RM mother-slug sets retail for $439.95 (DC, no sound) and $669.95 (with dual-mode sound decoder).

  1. Very nice, as Rapido always is. But my question looks forward. What layout will host your test runs from August on? Not sure the Wisconsin came with you to your new building.
