In co-operation with the railroad, MR’s Senior Editor Jim Hediger once took a trip to research Union Pacific’s Los Angeles subdivision. Upon Jim’s arrival in California, his host made a rather embarrassing discovery about the railroad operations for the day. Hear how Jim made the most of the situation and kept the planned Model Railroader magazine cover story right on track!

  1. Another great story from Old Hediger of what it was like back in the good old days. The LA Subdivision is the most modeled railroad in the nation. East Yard is over by Hobart and UP has trackage rights from Riverside to Mojave where they head either east to Daggett or north to Bakersfield. In 96 UP bought the Southern Pacific and everything was realigned. UP trains now come out of Colton and Cajon Pass has been rebuilt to provide a direct connection at Silverwood so eastbounds don’t have to go all the way up to Mojave to reach Barstow. RIP Old Hediger we will miss you. Onward!
